Music Lessons in Newcastle & North Tyneside

I have over 10 years of experience in teaching flute, Saxophone, Mandolin and Octave Mandolin. I provide music lessons for private students of all ages in a relaxed, friendly environment with your goals at heart. Kieran specialises in folk music and teaches classical and jazz Grades through Trinity and ABRSM exam boards.

Whether you would like your child to take grade exams or you’re returning to an instrument later in life… you may simply want an hour of playing Baroque flute duets together! I can accommodate your unique musical goals. 

I teach in schools in North Tyneside, privately at Northern Music Centre or my home in Wallsend not far from Newcastle upon Tyne.

Flute

Folk, Classical or Jazz

I teach up to and beyond Grade 8 standard and am proud to hold a grade 8 Distinction in classical flute. I specialise in traditional folk playing in which I have a degree from Newcastle University. I also enjoy Jazz styles and improvisation, and am currently exploring the wooden flute.

Saxophone

Sax is a dynamic and versatile instrument. I specialise in funk, jazz and improvisation, and continue to enjoy performing on sax in a number of genres, from solo wedding shows, Gospel choirs on big stages, and intimate jazz folk fusion projects.

Mandolin

I specialise in folk and bluegrass mandolin playing. In lessons we look at technique, tone, repertoire, improvisation and what I call “functional” theory. Thats all the theory you really need to know to help you on your playing journey.

Octave Mandolin

Folk, Bluegrass, tunes and accompaniment

My dad inpired me to play Octave Mandolin and It’s taken me all over the world with Monster Ceilidh Band and Kathryn Tickell and the Darkening. As with Mandolin in lessons we look at technique, tone, repertoire, improvisation what I call functional theory. Thats all the theory you really need to know to help you on your playing journey.

Music Tuition Areas Covered

Private lessons are taught from my home studio in Wallsend, at the Northern Music Centre, or in schools across North Tyneside. I don’t do home visits. I regularly welcome students from Newcastle upon Tyne, Wallsend, North Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, and the surrounding North East areas.
